Nothing can beat that father-daughter bond explored through baking homemade soft pretzels.
As an apprentice to the skill of bread making, this chef became the living protege of her father in the art of baking homemade soft pretzels. A skill of which I used to lack, baking homemade soft pretzels is now becoming an inherent process. Now a family tradition, my father’s children enjoy making soft pretzels as well as preparing other meals when we are together to give my mother free time to relax. We are now able to spend more time as family supporting one another’s needs.
Getting our hands messy together is good clean fun when it only involves flour and dough.
While not the fun my mother enjoys, catching the fish in our pond to save them from the harsh winter weather is a far dirtier version of the fun my father and I enjoy. As we wait for our dough to rise, we meander to the porch to enjoy the view of an evening sunset before our eyes. With the majestic mountain view we hunker down in the satisfaction of our status quo, appreciating our shared perspective.

In triumph our dough rises and we are ready to indulge in the next step in the process of making our homemade soft pretzels.
The smell of fresh dough is enough to make all the dogs attentive in our kitchen, eagerly awaiting to partake in the family meal. Knowing their diet is particular to our own, I give them the stink eye as we continue preparing homemade soft pretzels fit for a king.

This king on the mountaintop is not afraid to get his hands doughy in order to get the job done.
As dad presses the dough and cuts them appropriately, his protege gets tin foil out and oils the baking sheets. They work together to form the pretzels and add the salt on top. Finally they set the sheets in the oven and wait for the timer to go off to enjoy their reward.
A birds-eye view of these preformed homemade soft pretzels is all it takes to make this chef’s mouth water.
As we enjoy one another’s company our pretzels are baking away. The aroma of the home-cooked bread permeates our senses as we reminisce about our day together by the fire. The moon and stars are shining brightly from the porch.
As we pretend to be interested in our conversations with one another and father begins to nod off from his tired day at work, the worker bees anticipate the meal they made together with eager delight. The homemade soft pretzels are baked and ready to serve!
