My Review of Seeds of Hope by Jane Goodall

My Review of Seeds of Hope by Jane Goodall

My Review of Seeds of Hope by Jane Goodall Seeds of Hope is a book about the intrinsic relationship between humans and plant life. Since grade school I remember being taught the importance of trees and plants, as they were essential for us to live, breath and thrive. What I liked most about Seeds of Hope was how rounded the book was, and special concentration was spent in Chapter 10, “Plants That Can Heal”. Chapter 10 Medicinal Herbs It is astounding that there are so many medicines extracted from plants. It made me realize that plants not only sustain our lives by giving us the air we breath. They can also heal and prevent diseases. Medicinal plants have been used to treat typhoid, HIV-AIDS, diabetes, malaria and high blood pressure. Chimps in Gombi would eat leaves from a particular plant that could flush out roundworms and tapeworms only when they had the symptoms for these parasites. Seeds of Hope notes a time when surgeons used medication derived from plants to make muscles relax. Due to the growing popularity of using herbs in medicine in the West, Seeds of Hope documented that by 2010, 93 percent of these herbs became endangered in Sri Lanka and India. Reckless harvesting as well as habitat loss contributed to these decreasing numbers.   Today, the Sri Lankan government has taken action by allowing farming projects to grow these herbal plants to help the local economies, however traditional healers believe that the plants will not work as well in a monocultural environment. Growth of these plants in the wild involved many plant and animal interactions that were not in a...

“In the Shadow of Man” – Travel Animal Doctor

This book was particularly interesting to me due to my previous work experience with primates. – Travel Animal Doctor Since a three-month stint where I rehabilitated and cared for monkeys in Ecuador, I have been interested in working exclusively with primates. After a veterinary externship at Chimp Haven, a chimpanzee rescue in Louisiana, my interest grew. After veterinary school I relocated to live with my husband in Virginia. About a month ago an event appeared in my email, called the “Sowing the Seeds of Hope”, a seminar led by Dr. Jane Goodall, scheduled for April 17, 2015. I had to go. That evening Dr. Jane Goodall spoke about her time in Africa, and a convention she attended in 1986 that changed the course of her life. Her calling as a world-renowned environmentalist was born, and she has since been traveling over three hundred days a year to speak about how we can all work together to make the world a better place for all of mankind and the animal kingdom. The following review is on her book, In the Shadow of Man. In the Shadow of Man is an autobiography of Dr. Jane Goodall and an account of the lives of the chimpanzees from her field study research in Gombe. Dr. Louis Leakey, a famous anthropologist, met Jane in Africa and was extremely impressed with her knowledge of African animals. He set Goodall up with an opportunity to study chimpanzees temporarily in Gombe, Tanzania. Goodall was to research the movements and behavior of the chimpanzees. Since it was a temporary gig, she had a deadline to meet, and the...

“Hope for Animals and Their World” – Travel Animal Doctor

The book, Hope for Animals and their World brings awareness to successful conservation projects throughout the world. – Travel Animal Doctor The book includes discovery and rediscovery of living fossils and animals, and hope for endangered species across the world. The highlighted compiled short conservation project pieces were contributions to the empathetic, hardworking conservationists who deserve the credit where credit is due. Conservation project success stories near and dear to my heart that were included in this book were that of the Peregrine falcons and the Panamanian golden frogs, among countless others. Hope for Animals and their World briefly discusses the discovery of new species, and the Lazarus effect, recounting species that were believed to be extinct and recently rediscovered. Finally, Hope for Animals and their World, imparts hope upon our civilization, due to the continual efforts of conservation biologists, advocates and scientists worldwide. Peregrine falcons The story of the peregrine falcons highlights the efforts of Tom Cade, a falconer who made it his mission to save the falcons from extinction in America. The Bird Trust for Ornithology in Britain performed studies in the early 1960’s that indicated a large decline of falcons in the population. Joe Hickey, an ornithologist from Wisconsin, went to a conference where he learned news from the UK, that the use of pesticides, especially organochlorines, was a great risk to wildlife. In 1970, the Peregrine Fund began, founded by Tom Cade. With this fund a program was started to captive breed and later reintroduce the peregrine falcons into the population. After DDT was banned in the United States in 1972, natural recovery of the peregrine...
“The Cat’s Guide to Enjoying Napping” – Travel Animal Doctor

“The Cat’s Guide to Enjoying Napping” – Travel Animal Doctor

The Cat’s Guide to Enjoying Napping is the perfect book to read to young children before they go to bed. – Travel Animal Doctor This book is a great night time story for a child who loves cats. Even if your child is an animal lover, for the reasonable price of the book, it would be worth giving this book a try. The Cat’s Guide to Enjoying Napping is a charming tale about how different kittens choose to take their naps. Pictures of these cats give proof that not every cat goes to sleep the same way. And although they may be more comfortable sleeping one way rather than another, that is okay. Even without a storyline, the pictures in this book would be entertaining. Seeing the funny and unique positions that the cats sleep are sure to make any animal lover grin from ear to ear. The sentences are easy to read. I can imagine that the book would be a great book to use to teach children how to read. The Cat’s Guide to Enjoying Napping has a photograph of different cats on each page with one sentence rhyme about the picture. – Travel Animal Doctor My Niece’s Naptime I can see reading this story to my niece right before nap time. She eagerly looks forward to being read to, and hands a pile of books to you to read to her. Whenever she Skype’s my family, she gets extra excited when she gets to see the cat at my parent’s house.  It would be fun to try and read this story to her to see what she thinks of the story. With...

“Bear in the Backseat II” – Travel Animal Doctor

Bear in the Backseat II: Adventures of a Wildlife Ranger is a series of short stories about wildlife cases in the Smokies. – Travel Animal Doctor Have you ever wondered what a day in the life of a park ranger would be like? When going on a hike at a national park have you been curious as to why it is so important not to feed the bears, the elk or the other wildlife that is there? Riveting tales of bear visitations to camp sites and elk playing with hay bales help the reader understand why it is so important to keep a hands off approach with the Great Smoky Mountain wildlife. By feeding an animal or giving it positive reinforcement to rely on humans, this can cause dangerous occurrences for the next encounters. Tips If wild animals become too friendly with visitors it results in the animal being put down to avoid visitor harm. The information in this book is vital knowledge for a backpacker or family going to visit the park even if for only the day. It is an easy read for adults and the chapters are short enough that it is possible to read a story a night to a child. Bonus   If you buy the book as an ebook, it is enjoyable, but you do miss out on a potential bonus that you will find at the end of the book. While I do not want to give the surprise away, if you want to be fully satisfied with your purchase, give it the extra day for a book to be delivered to you...
