“Speed Reading” with Amazon Audible

Have you tried Amazon Audible? Has your mind ever spun in a million directions to the point that you could not sleep? Have you fallen victim of a restless night because although your eyes are tired, your brain just won’t slow down? Imagine that after a long and busy day, all you want to do is come home and hit the sack. The chores are done, and you should be able to relax, but your mind is just not ready to fall asleep. If you do not feel like zoning out in front of the television, how do you settle your brain down? An alternative solution to television is Amazon Audible.  By listening to the books you want to read, you do not have to use those eyes that have been working all day long. Incredibly, by listening to the storyline you can get through large portions of a book you have been dying to read without falling asleep. Amazon Audible is the perfect solution for a person who is restless but not ready to go to bed. Audible enables the user to get through a book much quicker than it would take to read one. The best thing about the Amazon library is that it has a vast selection of books to pick from, and has always had the desired book. Most recently I listened to a book called, Anti Cancer a New Way of Life, through the use of Amazon Audible. The author of this book, a cancer patient himself, offers helpful insight into treatment of the disease through his personal experience. The author, David Servan-Schreiber, MD, PhD, who was diagnosed with brain cancer, decided to research every...
Orangutans Endangered due to Palm Oil

Orangutans Endangered due to Palm Oil

How, exactly, are the orangutans endangered due to palm oil? Jade here, barking for the orangutans. What do the words slavery, animal abuse, and murder have in common? These words, as well as deforestation and complete environmental destruction, are linked to an ongoing plight targeting orangutans and people of Indonesia and Malaysia due to the palm oil industry. My mom worked with orangutans at one of her veterinary externships. One time humom came home with an enchanting tale about caring for an estranged baby orangutan. The baby orangutan wore a diaper and hugged her tight as he peered up at her with his big deep brown eyes. As Humom told me this story I witnessed a far away look of dismay in her eyes. Schristia / Foter / CC BY-SA I waited patiently as I often do when Humom gets sad in the middle of a good story. After a minute, I detected those familiar crows feet and licked her face to welcome her smile’s return. Joy overcame humom as she remembered how the small orangutan grasped around her waist and took food straight from her spoon to his lips. I begged humom to tell me why she was upset. It was then that I learned the predicament orangutans are in. They are being kicked out of their homes in the wild so consumers can have cheap peanut butter, candy, cookies, cosmetics and conditioners. Poor are enslaved to work in the palm oil industry. Poachers slaughter adult orangutans for meat and illegal trade. _paVan_ / Foter / CC BY It is important to save the Asian rainforests from the devastation...
Spicy Mexican Zucchini Boats

Spicy Mexican Zucchini Boats

Today I am excited to talk about the spicy Mexican zucchini boats recipe. At my animal health emergency response corp training I met a woman who introduced me to zucchini boats. Enticed by how easy and healthy they looked, I had to come home and try making them for myself.   Even while preparing the spicy Mexican zucchini boats, I was unsure about how they would come out. The spicy Mexican zucchini boats recipe seemed so healthy, that I was concerned it would taste “too healthy”. I’m sure you know what I mean. Like a salad without dressing, or an orange eaten for the 90th day in a row. My fear was that the zucchini would not cook all the way through and that it would come out raw, or that the entire recipe would be a flop and would just not taste that good. Although I was following the spicy Mexican zucchini boat recipe to a tee, I believed we would be merely using the zucchini as a cup to eat the toppings out of. I thought no harm no foul, and it was worth a try.  I am so happy now that although there were uncertainties, this spicy Mexican zucchini boat recipe was tried. I was about to alter the zucchini boat recipe to cook the zucchini first and then put the ingredients in after. I am glad now that I didn’t use this technique. If I would have tried to cook the zucchini first before filling the “boat” with the other ingredients, the zucchini juices would not have soaked into the ingredients as much, and it...
Who Says Dogs Can’t Play Tennis

Who Says Dogs Can’t Play Tennis

Jade here, updating you from my little corner of the world. My parents took me to the park the other day with tennis rackets in their hands and tennis balls in their pockets. I was a bit nervous of those rackets. The sheer size alone made me hesitant to get close. But then out of those pockets came the animated bouncing lime green Wilson balls, who quickly became my new best friends. Who says dogs can’t play tennis? This is when the adventure began. My humom hit that ball far far away and I ran for it as fast as I could. Stretching my legs felt so good. I was proud to get that ball and brought it all the way back so that my mom could hit it for me again. Humom whacked that ball straight to my dad, which he returned back to her with a smack of his racket. I waited eagerly for the ball to be hit to me and soon enough there it went. After around three times of chasing that ball I was out of breath. I sat and watched humom and dad pop the ball back and forth, all the while begging them to take a break so they could sit next to me and rub my belly. After our short break we were at it again. My dad hit a ball for me that was not very far away. I went and got it but only brought it halfway back. I figured I was getting enough exercise and it was my dad’s turn to go get the ball. After about thirty minutes...
