Travel Animal Doctor: Your Pet’s Skin

Your pet’s skin is considered the largest organ of his body. – Travel Animal Doctor The integrity of the skin is extremely important to maintain if you want your pet to stay healthy.  Pay attention to how your pet‘s skin looks and bring her to a veterinarian if the skin or fur pattern seems to have a drastic change. Also know that with the help of your veterinarian, you can play a crucial part in preventing diseases in your pet so that it saves you from having to take repeated trips to your veterinarian. Just like you, your pet can get sunburnt. Sun If you have a pet that is white or light in color limit the amount of time that your pet is stuck in the sun. If your animal is an outside only animal make sure that shade (and water) is available to your pet throughout the day. Allergies Your pet can also be allergic to his or her food. Fur loss in certain areas of the body can point towards a possible food allergy. Finally your pet may have an endocrine disease. One of the first clues to a veterinarian that there may be a problem going on inside the pet can be seen from the outside. Parasites Furthermore, your pet is exposed to many parasites that can make his skin itchy or dry.   When he is outside drinking from a pond with his bare paws exposed to the earth, this is the prime time for a parasite to attach. Even when a dog is lying in the shade, he is not safe from parasites. There are...

Travel Animal Doctor: Keeping Your Pet’s Body Healthy

Your pet’s body is it’s sanctuary. – Travel Animal Doctor Your Pet’s Body The dog’s nose is used for sniffing and breathing. Her eyes are used to guide her owner across the street.  Your dog’s heart is used to pump blood and oxygen through your pet’s body.  Her legs are used to run and jump. Her tail wags to let you know that she is happy and eager to please you.  Her mouth is used for eating treats when she is good and most importantly to eat her meals and to drink her water. What she consumes gives her the energy and hydration she needs to keep her body functioning properly. This energy is important to keep her heart beating, her legs running, her mouth chewing, her nose sniffing, her tail wagging and her eyes open. This is why what your pet eats is vital to her healthy and happy lifestyle. Food If you have a child he can tell you when he is hungry or thirsty.  The uniqueness of a pet is that you are relying on body language and barking to tell you what she needs.  This is why it is essential to know the proper portions of food necessary for your pet’s lifestyle. Let’s say you left unlimited grilled cheese sandwiches that do not go bad on the kitchen table throughout the day for your child. Not every child would know the appropriate amount to eat in a day and could potentially become overweight. Furthermore if you are watching television at night and want to do something else but are too tired to work on the computer, do you...

Vegetarian and Vegan Recipes- Travel Animal Doctor

Travel Animal Doctor here, eager to share my vegetarian and vegan recipes with you, as well as ones that I come across that look good. When I got married it was the summer of my 2nd year of veterinary school. Becoming a veterinarian is no easy task. That summer, as I did every summer, I was working at an internship.  My husband and I decided to have a destination wedding in order to get married quickly without having to worry about a lot of planning.  The one thing about having a destination wedding is that we did not have much family there with us.  As a wedding gift my mother had all of our family members write a vegetarian recipe for my husband and me. The result was a wonderful organizer full of delicious looking vegetarian and vegan recipes written and signed by family members. I have been a vegetarian for years, and was a vegan for two years.  This organizer meant a lot to me. Not only did it help me feel accepted for my lifestyle choice by my family, but it also helped me to feel as if everyone was there with us in spirit for our big day. According to the USDA, the majority of Americans spend 67 minutes a day primarily just eating. This is often also when we can spend quality time with our families and friends.  Eating dinner with my husband is one of the highlights of my day. I get so much gratification from these vegetarian and vegan recipes and am eager to share them so that others can enjoy them too. Please...
